Consider a new 38 percent efficient 600-MW power plant burning 9000 Btu/lb coal containing 1 % sulfur. If all of the sulfur oxidizes to SO2, how many pounds of SO2 per kWh of electricity generated would be released if the plant is equipped with a 90% efficient scrubber? (1 kWh = 3412 Btu) Suppose we assume the following: ¢ Any CFCs released into the atmosphere remain there indefinitely At current rates of release, atmospheric concentration of CFCs would double in 100 yrs. Atmospheric release rates are, however, not constant but growing at 2%/yr. How long would it take to double atmospheric CFC concentrations?

Explanation / Answer

Answer: 8).A).

Given Coal = 9000 Btu

Efficiency of PLant = 38%

38% of burning coal = (9000*38)/100

= 3420

1% of sulphur = 3420/100 = 34.2 Btu

Conversion of quantity into enrgy given as, 3412 Btu will produce 1 kWh of energy.

Then 90 Btu = 34.2/3412

= 0.010 kWh of energy

9). A). It will take 25 Years

1% of sulphur will produce 0.026 kWh of energy
