Mitosis and meiosis are important processes. a) What does each accomplish; b) where in the human body can each occur and c) how do the cells produced compare in chromosome number to the parent cells?

Explanation / Answer

a- The main function of the mitosis is to produce the same daughter cells as that of the mother whereas meiosis helps in the production of gametes which are genetically different from each other.

B- Mitosis takes place in all the cell of the body whereas meiosis takes place only in the ovary in the female and testes in the male

C- In a case of Mitosis, there is the separation of the sister chromatids formed due to DNA replication during the S-phase of the cell cycle. Meiosis is divided into two part meiosis-I and meiosis-II. In a case of Meiosis-I, there is the separation of a homologous chromosome during the anaphase which the daughter cells chromosome number is reduced to half of the mother cell chromosome. In meiosis-II there is separation of sister chromatids due to which the daughter cell has same number of chromosomes as that of the mother cell (cells formed after meiosis-I)
