Question
I need some help with these double displacement reactions and their COMPLETE AND NET IONIC EQUATIONS. I understand percipitates and swtiching the cations and anions, and etc. BUT I'm having some trouble with some equations. I have two example problems. I'm having troube because I don't understand what to do/what to write when the products are all soluble?
1) NiCl2 + BaCl2 --> ....???
I'm confused on #1 because both the anions are Cl? So I need help for molecular equation, complete ionic, and net ionic equations.
2) NiCl2 + Na2SO4 --> NiSO4 + 2NaCl
#2 I just need help with complete ionic and net ionic. NiSO4 is soluble so I don't know what to write for my ionic equations.
Explanation / Answer
NiCl2 (aq) + BaCl2 (aq) --- > No reaction since both are having same anions.
2).
NiCl2 (aq) + Na2SO4 (aq) --> NiSO4 (aq) + 2NaCl (aq)
Lets write total ionic equation
Ni2+ (aq) + 2Cl- (aq) + 2Na+(aq) + SO42- (aq) --> Ni2+ (aq) + 2Cl- (aq) + 2Na+(aq) + SO42- (aq)
Net ionic equation:
Here we cancel the spectator ions.
Actually all of the ions present in the total ionic equation are cancelled so there is not net reaction
