Question

Since atoms arc so very small ii is reasonable to expert that their weight vs ill also be (Go to Panel A on the next page) 2 moles of Hydrogen atoms How many moles of oxygen atoms arc in one mole of H2SO4? (Go to Panel B on the next page) 3 moles of hydrogen atoms weigh 3.03 grams. Now lets extend this from elements to compounds. To calculate the molar mass of a compound, we must first know its chemical formula. W hat is the formula for water? (Go to Panel C on the next page) 2.00 moles of NH3 34.0 g NH3 34.0 g NH3 times 1 mole NH3/17.04g NH3=2.00 moles NH3 Suppose you had 68.0 grams of NHi, how many moles would you have? (Go to Panel D on the next page)

Explanation / Answer

Solution :-

Part A) Since the atoms are very small it is reasonable to expect their weight will also be very small.

Part B) 1 mol H2SO4

How many moles of Oxygen atoms

1 mol H2SO4 contains 4 moles of the oxygen

Because ratio is 1 : 4 for the H2SO4 to oxygen

So the answer is 4 mol oxygen

Part C)

Formula of the water is = H2O

Part D) 68.0 g NH3

Moles of NH3 = ?

Formula to calculate the moles is

Moles = mass / molar mass

Moles of NH3 = 68.0 g / 17.03 g per mol

                         =    3.99 mol NH3

We can round it to the 4.0 mol NH3
