Question

I need some help with this instrumental analysis question, please help with all parts of this question, thank you!

3a. Would different molecules have different path lengths as they passed through a bed consisting of a

      packed column shown below?

b) Can the difference in length between the shortest and longest path be dependent at all on the

diameter of the particles? If so, which particles (smaller or larger) would lead to a greater difference?

c) Some packed columns exhibit channeling. What do you think is meant by this term?

d) Would channeling be more likely to occur with smaller or larger particles? In other words, which is

more difficult to pack efficiently, larger or smaller particles? A column is packed efficiently when the

particles are in a uniform bed with the minimum amount of voids.

Explanation / Answer

a) Different molecules will have different path lengths when they pass through the packed column. Any molecule follows the least resistant path leading to different path length

b) The diameter influences the difference in shortest and longest path and this is more significant in large diameter particles

c) The flow of liquid towsrd the wall is known as channeling

d) smaller patciles are difficult to pack efficiently
