Over a wide range of experimental conditions, the gas-phase reaction
2NO + O2 = 2NO2
has been observed to be second order in NO and first order in O2. Two proposed mechanism for this conversion are shown below:
Mechanism A:
NO + NO = N2O2
N2O2 + O2 = NO2 + NO2
Mechanism B:
NO + O2 = NO3
NO + NO3 = NO2 + NO2
Use the steady state approximation to derive the predicted rate law for each of these mechanisms. Descibe the restrictions that must be placed on the relative rates of the steps in each mechanism in order for each to be an acceptable possible mechanism for the reaction.
