Question

Please explain where you get numbers from. Assume outside pressure is 747.2 mmHg if that's required.

At constant temperature, the water level on the closed side of the manometer-flask set-up is at 5.0 cm and the water level on the open side is at 6.0 cm above the bottom of the manometer. Water is added to the open side of the manometer and system is allowed to equilibrate. After the system has balanced out, the open side water level is now at 40.0 cm and the closed side water level is at 16.0 cm above the bottom of the manometer. If the 2 cross-section of the manometer is 0.26 cm , what was the volume change of the gas on the closed side of the manometer?

Explanation / Answer

change in height at closed end is 16-5 = 11 cm

now cross section area = 0.26 cm^2

volume of gas decreased = cross section x height = 0.26 cm^2 x 11 cm = 2.86 cm^3 = 2.9 cm^3

since volume is decreased we indicate negative sign

hence volume changed = -2.9 cm^3 = - 2.9 ml   ( since 1cm3 = 1ml)
