Question
Imagine that you have a 5.00 L gas tank and a 4.50 L gas tank. You need to fill one tank with oxygen and the other with acetylene to use in conjunction with your welding torch. If you fill the larger tank with oxygen to a pressure of 125 atm , to what pressure should you fill the acetylene tank to ensure that you run out of each gas at the same time? Assume ideal behavior for all gases. Acetylene torches are used for welding. These torches use a mixture of acetylene gas, C_2H_2, and oxygen gas, O_2 to produce the following combustion reaction: 2C_2H_2 (g) + 50_2 (g)rightarrow4CO_2 (g) + 2H_2O(g)Explanation / Answer
Solution :-
We have 5 L volume of O2 and 125 atm pressure assume temperature is 298 K for both gases
Now lets calculate the moles of O2
PV= nRT
n=PV/RT
n = 125 atm * 5.0 L / 0.08206 L atm pere mol K *298 K
n= 25.56 mol O2
then mole ratio of the O2 and acetylene is 5 :2
so moles of acetylene needed are calculated as
25.26 mol O2 * 2 mol acetylene / 5 mol O2 = 10.224 mol acetylene
Now using this moles of acetylene lets calculate its pressure
P= nRT/V
P= 10.224 mol * 0.08206 L atm per mol K * 298 K / 4.5 L
P= 55.56 atm
So the pressure of acetylene needed = 55.56 atm
or we can round it to 55.6 atm
