I need some help with this question. Could you provide some theory to explain the answers
a) Two types of nodes occur in atomic orbitals: spheca (radial) surfaces and planes (angles). Examine the 2s, 2p, and 3p orbitals, given below, and then characterize their nodes outer ba of electron densit wave trough) nucleus inner ball of electron density (wave peak) 2s 2p 3p spherical (radial) node no nodes both nodal types b) Which of the following statements are true? (Select all that apply.) An orbital of principal quantum number n has n-1 nodes The value of gives the number of planar (angular) nodesExplanation / Answer
For any orbitals which has specific n and l value
Total number of noded = n-1
Number of radicla nodes = n-l-1
number of angular nodes = l
We can use above formulaes
2s has n =2 , l = 0 for s , hence number of radial nodes = 2-1-0 = 1 , no angular nodes of 2s
2p has n = 2 , l= 1 , hence number of radial nodes = 2-1-1= 0 , angular nodes = l = 1
3p has n = 3, l= 1 , number of radial nodes = 3-1-1= 1 , angular nodes = l = 1
b) Both statemenst right
c) 6s has n-l-1 = 6-0-1 =5 radial nodes
3d has n-1 total nodes = 3-1 = 2
radial nodes of 3d = n-l-1 = 3-2-1 = 0
