Question
Topic 5 Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs):
Investigate a food or an organism that has been genetically altered to serve a specific purpose. Why was it modified? What gene(s) were modified or introduced? Is its use subject to any regulation? Cite the sources of all relevant information you discuss. Your main response should be a minimum of 100 words. You also need to post at least one reply to a classmate that contribute to their learning (50 words minimum). You must cite all the scientifically valid (i.e. peer-reviewed) references that support your posts (one reference per post minimum required).
Explanation / Answer
genetic modified organism is any organism whose genetic material has been changed using genetic engineering techniques
for example :- bacteria .
bacteria was modified in a laboratory due to relative ease of modifying their genetics i.e its gene can be alter easily as compare with other organism.
WHY..?
genetic modified bacteria are used to produce protein insulin to treat diabetes.
USES
some other bacteria are used to produced biofuels , clotting factor ( to treat haemophilia) , human growth hormone etc.
HOW.?
plasmids are the fragments of dna that occur naturally. a plasmid can encode a protein that offers its host a selective advantage ( i.e host can select a particular protein)
for example: a plasmid that encodes a antibiotic allows its host bacterium to thwart ( prevents) competing microbes.
