Question

Plasma contains more sodium than chloride. Explain in a paragraph how this can be if individual ions of sodium and chloride exactly balance each other out, and plasma is electrically neutral? Plasma contains more sodium than chloride. Explain in a paragraph how this can be if individual ions of sodium and chloride exactly balance each other out, and plasma is electrically neutral? Plasma contains more sodium than chloride. Explain in a paragraph how this can be if individual ions of sodium and chloride exactly balance each other out, and plasma is electrically neutral?

Explanation / Answer

Chloride ions are negatively charged while sodium ions are positively charged. Plasma contains more sodium that chloride. But plasma contains several other negatively charged molecules other than chloride ions to balance out the difference due to higher number of positively charged molecules i.e. sodium. Therefore, plasma is electrically neutral.
