Question
In the estrogen and progesterone lessons we discussed the complexity of female contraceptives. Find the names of three trademarked drugs (ie not general drug names but actual formulations) Compare and contrast them. Points to consider: 1) potency, 2) drug deliver methods, 3) pharmacokinetics, 4) adverse effects and 5) contraindications. It would be most useful to highlight the differences between these drugs and how they are used. The A-level essay will address 3 drugs that are administered through different delivery strategies. Ideally, cover 4 of the 5 highlighted points to look at. Use drug company web pages to find the drugs, and use the web resource https: //dailvmed.nlm.nih.gov/dailvmed/to look up specifics. Report your findings in an essay at least 1 page long (college expectations for essay writing). Place the Word document containing the essay in the dropbox "contraceptives"Explanation / Answer
I have selected three hormonal contraceptives: femilon, mirena and depo provera. Femilon is a combined oral contraceptive pill. Mirena is a hormonal intrauterine device and depo provera is an injectable contraceptive.
Femilon contains ethinyl oestradiol 0.02mg and desogestrel 0.15mg. When taken according to the prescribed regimen, femilon is 100% effective in preventing pregnancy. Some of the adverse effects are weight gain, headache and migraine, deep vein thrombosis and gall bladder disease. Contraindicated in liver disease, previous history of thromboembolism and cardiac abnormalities.
Mirena is a levonorgesterol releasing intra uterine device releasing 20 microgram of levonorgesterol per day. It has low pregnancy rate of 0.2 per 100 women. Adverse effects are pain, bleeding, pelvic infection and ectopic pregnancy. Contraindicated in pelvic inflammatory disease, cancer of cervix, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding and previous ectopic pregnancy.
Depo provera is an injectable contraceptive. It contains medroxy progesterone acetate. It is given in intramuscular injections of 150mg every 3 months. It gives protection in 99% women for 3 months. Side effects are weight gain and prolonged infertility after its use. Contraindicated in patients having hypercholesterolemia and disorders in blood clotting mechanism.
