Question
Answer required in 4 hours max.
I need step by step balanced equations for the following experiment: Ethylenediamine complexes of Nickel Procedure 1. Dissolve 1.3g NiCl2 6H2O in 1.5 mL of warm water. 2. With stirring, slowly add 5mL of 50% ethylenediamine solution 3. Cool in ice for 15 min., add 10mL ethanol(95%) and put back in the ice bath for 10min. 4.Filter, and then wash with two 10mL portions of ethanol and two 10mL portions of ether. 5. Air dry, weigh, bottle, and label the blue-purple product.
Thanks very much.
Explanation / Answer
1.NiCl2.6H2O when dissolved in water ionizes and forms [Ni(H2O)6]^2+ + 2Cl-
NiCl2.6H2O ---> [Ni(H2O)6]^2+ + 2Cl-
2. When Ethylenediamine(en), a bidentate ligand is added the following series of reactions will occur
[Ni(H2O)6]^2+(aq)-green+ en(aq) ----> [Ni(H2O)4(en)]^2+(aq)-pale blue + 2H2O(l)
[Ni(H2O)4(en)]^2+(aq) + en(aq) ----> [Ni(H2O)2(en)2]^2+(aq)-blue-purple +2H2O(l)
[Ni(H2O)4(en)]^2+(aq) + en(aq) ----> [Ni(en)3]^2+(aq)-violet +2H2O(l)
