Question
I need some help grasping the concept of "poisson branching process" which I know is related to the poisson distribution. An article that I have to present uses poisson branching process to estimate the age of alleles. Can someone please explain in lay vocabulary?
Thank you!
Explanation / Answer
The Poisson branching process was first introduced as a model for series of events. There is a series of primary events which generate a subsidiary series of events. In each subsidiary series there are a random number (S) of events separated by the random variables Y1, Y2,...Ys, (S may also have the value of 0-->no subsidiary events follow the primary event in this case). The subsidiary processes are assumed to be independent of one another and have identical structure. The complete process is then the superposition of the events in the primary and subsidiary processes, the assumption is that the two types of events will then be indistinguishable.
