Question

The following silica gel TLC was developed in hexane : ethyl acetate (1:1), is this a good TLC? Why? If it is not a good TLC, how can you improve it? One of the ingredients in Sriracha is potassium sorbate. You are given 5 sauces (sample B - E) that all resembles Sriracha. You decide to run a TLC with the extract of each condiment alongside potassium sorbate (sample A). Determine the R_f values of the 6 samples and determine which is really Sriracha. Rank the polarity of the samples. Is the structure of potassium sorbate consistene with the relative polarity?

Explanation / Answer

1. It is not good TLC because compound spot is very close to base line. And compounds are not separated.

3. Rf value

A = 2/7= 0.28

B = 6/7= 0.86

C= 4/7= 0.57

D= 2/7= 0.28

E= 6/7 = 0.86

F= 1/7= 0.14

Compound A and D are same.

Polarity: F > A=D > C> B=E
