Please answer the following questions
In a demonstration, a plastic rod rubbed with fur was able to 'bend' a stream of water as it flowed into a beaker. What characteristic of water explains this bending of the water stream? Select one: a. Polar nature b. Adhesion c. Density d. Temperature stability e. Oxygen holding capacity Where is the energy in food? Select one: a. in water molecules b. in the bonds of the biological molecules c. in the foods' ATPs d. in the enzymes e. there is no energy in food Which of the following is INCORRECT about DNA? Select one: a. It is a double stranded helical molecule b. It is a nucleic acid c. It is a uniform width due to purine and pyrimidine pairings d. It contains the base uracil e. It indirectly codes for proteins You notice your lovely house-plant, Gertruditis elegansi, that occupies the windowsill of your home is growing at an angle toward the window. You yell "Eureka" (scaring the living daylights out of your snoozing old dog) because you recognize the plant's unique growth response illustrates the following characteristic of life Select one: a. Homeostasis b. Response to stimuli c. Reproduction d. Evolution e. Always trying to get a better view of the worldExplanation / Answer
1. Option A is correct. When a plastic rod is rubbed with fur then rod becomes negatively charged because of the transfer of electrons from fur to the plastic rod. This negatively charged plastic rod can bend the water stream because water is polar and two hydrogen atoms of water has partial positve charge because of higher electronegativity of oxygen molecule. Oxygen pull the electron from hydrogen towards it and hence partial negative charge develops on oxygen atom. Since plastic rod has negative charge and the hydrogen atoms of water has positive charge therefore plastic rod can bend the stream of water due to attraction between positive and negative charges.
2. The correct answer is b. The energy in the food is present in the bonds of the biological molecules. When these biological molecule for example glucose goes to respiration cycle then due to various redox reactions the bonds present in glucose molecule break and ultimately produce energy in the form of ATP.
3. The correct answer is d. Uracil is not found in DNA. Uracil is found in RNA instead of thymine in DNA
4. Option b is correct. The growth of plants towards sunlight is the example of phototropism. Here plant shows the response to stimuli (sunlight) and hence grow in the direction of sunlight.
