A patriarchal society has been an evil and a hindrance to growth in the past, recent, and present times. Marriage in relation to patriarchy has had an extreme effect in a deeper sense. Male-dominated societies have subordinated women, leaving them less influential with no say in the activities and decision-making processes. This topic is appealing as it is a trend I have encountered firsthand in my community and family. Women have specific designated duties, which are limited to house chores (Carol and Naomi 12).

In my family, my mother is in charge of house chores with the kitchen as her central office. My interest in women empowerment motivates me to understand the underlying factors that suppress women's growth and development. Some of my hypotheses for this study include: patriarchal systems affect women's self-worth in marriages. Through the exploration of chick lit materials, one gets a better perspective of how patriarchy affects marriages from the standpoint of women who encounter the effects the most. By discussing various chick lit narratives, one can identify the struggles and internal conflicts that women experience within the confines of patriarchal marriages.
