Despite the presence of these diverse professionals, the team’s communication and coordination functions could be significantly improved. This paper will explore how interprofessional collaboration can be enhanced in the unit by focusing on nursing actions related to compassion, advocacy, resilience, and evidence-based practice, which ultimately impacts the culture of the organization and patient outcomes.
Compassion
Compassionate care is fundamental in nursing, and interprofessional collaboration can amplify the effectiveness of compassionate actions. One nursing action that contributes to compassion is the initiation of weekly interdisciplinary rounds on the unit, where bedside nurses present their patients’ stories and care needs to the whole team. This practice fosters empathy and deeper understanding among team members (Hoffman & Jolliffe, 2018). When the entire team is informed about the patient's emotional and psychosocial context, it nurtures a culture of compassion that resonates throughout the unit.
