2 Week 2 Writing Notebook Essay Structure Activity Each week you will have an opportunity to practice different aspects of the writing process in a writing notebook. It consists of a template you will fill out and submit in Canvas. In addition to introducing and practicing targeted components of the writing process, these notebooks are meant to help you to determine your own strengths and to identify opportunities for growth. STEP ONE: College Writing Tips
One crucial step mentioned in the Body Paragraphs webpage that I think will significantly aid my writing is the importance of using strong topic sentences to anchor each paragraph. Topic sentences not only specify what the paragraph will discuss but also link back to the thesis, maintaining coherence throughout the essay (Oshima & Hogue, 2006). Establishing a clear connection between a topic sentence and the thesis can enhance the clarity of my argument.
Moreover, a helpful tip that has proven beneficial in my writing process is outlining each paragraph before drafting. An outline acts as a roadmap for my thoughts and ensures that I stay on topic. It allows me to organize my ideas logically, helping to produce a well-structured and coherent essay (Graff & Birkenstein, 2018).
STEP TWO: Your Working Thesis
For my upcoming Week 2 written assignment, my thesis statement reads: "The pervasive influence of social media reshapes personal identity, impacts interpersonal relationships, and modifies societal norms." This thesis explores three essential aspects that relate to the evolving role social media plays in contemporary society.
STEP THREE: Traditional Structure Activity
Based on my thesis, here are three topic sentences that will serve as a roadmap for my essay:
- Topic Sentence #1: The influence of social media on personal identity is profound, as individuals often curate their online images to project desired facets of themselves to the digital world.
- Topic Sentence #2: In addition to shaping identity, social media fundamentally alters interpersonal relationships by redefining how individuals communicate and perceive one another.
- Topic Sentence #3: Finally, the ubiquitous presence of social media acts as a catalyst for changing societal norms, contributing to shifts in cultural values, behaviors, and social expectations.
STEP FOUR: Review and Reflect
Reflecting on my work in this exercise, I found that organizing my thoughts into clearly defined topic sentences made the overall structure of my essay clearer and more cohesive. However, I encountered challenges in ensuring that my topic sentences directly aligned with my thesis. I had to refine them multiple times to maintain focus on the central argument. I was familiar with the importance of strong topic sentences from previous writing experiences, but the specific connection to the thesis required deeper consideration than I had anticipated. This activity has encouraged me to prioritize clarity and coherence in my writing, reinforcing the need to establish a strong foundational structure for my essays.
