Reflection on Media Consumption
Tracking my media consumption over a 24-hour period has been an eye-opening experience that highlights both the extent of my media interaction and the nuances of my daily life. Altogether, I spent about eight hours engaging with various forms of mass media, which brings to light the role that media plays in my everyday activities and interactions.
One surprise was the substantial amount of time I dedicated to visual media, especially streaming services and television. Three hours watching streaming content may seem substantial, considering it accounts for 37.5% of my total media consumption. While I enjoy these shows for entertainment and relaxation, it made me reflect on how I often allocate my free time towards passive consumption rather than engaging in more active learning or personal development.
Additionally, the experience exposed just how habitually I use social media platforms—30 minutes is quite a significant commitment, especially as these moments are often interspersed throughout the day and can easily extend beyond the recorded period. This raises questions about the nature of my attention on social media. Am I genuinely interested in the content, or is it merely a habitual escape? There’s a growing body of literature indicating that digital media consumption, especially social media, can heighten feelings of anxiety and depression, particularly in adolescents and young adults (Twenge et al., 2018). This knowledge has prompted me to reconsider how much time I spend scrolling through feeds.
In analyzing the role of news media in my life, the combination of radio, podcasts, and news apps (approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes) demonstrates an eagerness to stay informed about current events—an essential aspect of being an engaged citizen. Engaging with high-quality journalism, such as NPR and well-curated podcasts, broadens my understanding of varied perspectives, leading to greater empathy and awareness.
From this tracking activity, I discovered the need for a more balanced media diet. While the consumption of articles and academic material has its benefits, I realized that there are opportunities for more meaningful engagement with my leisure time—like returning to hobbies such as reading physical books or exploring outdoor activities.
