1. Personal Reaction to the Case Study
Upon reading the case study “Inequity in India: A Conditional Cash Incentive Scheme – Janani Suraksha Yojana,” I experienced a range of emotions including discomfort and anger. I was particularly struck by the portrayal of gender-based inequities and the dynamics of power within families. My discomfort seemed to stem from my values regarding individual autonomy, equality, and the rights of women. These experiences point to my beliefs that marriage should be a partnership rather than a hierarchical arrangement where one gender dominates. They also highlighted my assumptions about family dynamics and the normative expectations of childbirth, which are drastically different in the context of India compared to my own culture. My beliefs about this case largely come from my upbringing in a society that champions individual rights and gender equality, as well as from education that emphasizes these values (Agarwal, 2019).
2. Points of Disagreement during Discussions
During our discussions, I encountered differing viewpoints regarding the effectiveness of the Janani Suraksha Yojana program. Some teammates argued that the initiative was a well-intentioned effort that needed more time to show results, while I believed that its impact on altering gender dynamics and health outcomes was minimal. This disagreement made me feel frustrated, as I could not reconcile the idea of a cash incentive with fundamental changes in deeply entrenched cultural practices. When working with others, I often face challenges associated with differing personalities, especially when dealing with dominant personalities that tend to overshadow quieter individuals. For instance, I find it particularly difficult to work with passive-aggressive personalities, as their reluctance to express conflicts openly can lead to unresolved tensions. Conversely, as an extroverted individual who often expresses thoughts directly, I realize that I may come across as overwhelming or intimidating to my quieter teammates, making collaboration more challenging (Steinberg, 2021). I am aware that fostering a team environment where everyone's voice can be heard is essential for productive discourse and will continue to work on being more inclusive and accommodating.
4. Contribution to Civil Discourse
This week, I aimed to contribute positively to civil discourse by actively listening to my teammates’ perspectives while addressing contrasting opinions respectfully.
