Question

Can someone please help me with these questions? Detailed answers are highly appreciated (especially for e). Thank you.

BCC structures arc not so close packed and tend to be less ductile .HCP structures on the other hand, are close packed planes but have a tendency to be a bit more brittle rather than FCC why do you think that is? e) Why do you think a metal, for example, like tungsten, might crystallize as BCC when there are no close packed planes just close packed directions d) CuQ, and Cu_2O are not 100% ionic. Explain what you think the other type of bonding is in these oxides beside ionic and explain which one of the copper oxides would be more ionic and why.

Explanation / Answer

d) The behavior of metals so far as ductility and brittle nature are concerned differs for FCC, BCC and HCP type sysytems. FCC systems are ductile because of the availability of a relatively large number of slip systems. A large number of slip systems results in low yield strengths, which causes plastic flow at stresses less than those required to cause fracture. For example, Cu, Al, Ni etc. On the otherhand HCP systems exhibit brittle nature even at low temperature due to lower number of slip systems. Ex- Cd, Zn, Mn etc.
