Explanation / Answer

Atomic number of U = 92 = number of protons.

Number of neutrons = mass number - number of protons.

= 235-92

=143

Now calculate the mass defect:

: Mass defect for U235 = {92*Mass of protons p + (143)*Mass of neutrons } – Mass of (U-235)
M = 92*1.00727647 + 143*1.00866492 – 235.04392 amu

M = 236.9085 – 235.04392 amu

M =1.86458 amu

M =3.0962*10^-27 kg

mass change into energy as follows:

E= M C^2

= 3.0962*10^-27 kg       *(3.00*10^8 m/S)^2

=2.79*10^-11 J

=2.79*10^-11 * 1 MeV / 1.602*10^-13 J= 1742 MeV

1 J = 6.242*10^ 18 eV

1 MeV = 1.602 *10^-13 J

Binding energy per nucleon = total energy / mass number

=1742 MeV/ 235

=7.4 MeV
