Question

Masses -

125ML Flask = 63.46 ML

100ML Beaker = 31.80 ML

Zinc Powder = 2.00g

Iodine Crystals = 2.00g

Flask & Zinc = 64.85

Beaker & Product = 34.46

Questions: Final Mass of unreacted Zinc?, Mass of Zinc Reacted?, Mass of Iodine?, Moles of Zinc Metal Reacted?, Moles Iodine (I2) Reacted?, Moles I atoms reacted?, Ratio Moles Iodide Ion to Moles Zinc Ion?, Empirical Formula of Zinc Iodide?

These were all the numbers I have. We are doing experiment Synthesis of the Compound Zinc Iodide from its elements. The only reaction I see is the observation of how the mixture changed colors at it was boiling.

I have other question to answer also like... Calculate the total mass of Zinc and Iodine before the reaction?

Explanation / Answer

Zn(s) + I2(g) -- > ZnI2(s)

so...

mol of Zn = mass/MW = 2/65.38 = 0.03059

mol of I2= mass/MW = 2/253.808940 = 0.00787

ratio is 1:1 so I2 limits

0.00787 mol of I2 reacts...

0.00787 mol of Zn reacts

mol of I2 left = 0.00787-0.00787 = 0

mol of Zn left = 0.03059-0.00787 = 0.02272

mass of Zn left = 0.02272*65.38 = 1.4854 g of Zn left

mass of zinc reacted = 0.00787*65.38 = 0.5145 g of Zn reacted

Mass of iodine = 2 g reacted

ratio moles of Iodine to Zn --> 2 mol of I- per 1 mol of Zn+2 = 2:1 or 2
