Explanation / Answer

Answer- Part B) We are given the reaction between glyceryl tristearate and sodium hydroxide. We know glyceryl tristearate has molecular formula (CH)2CH(CH3(CH2)16)3 and sodium hydroxide is NaOH, so reaction between the (CH)2CH(CH3(CH2)16)3 and NaOH as follow -

C57H10O6 + 3 NaOH -----> C3H8O3 + 3 C54H35O6Na3

Part C) We are given, [NaOH] = 0.575 M , mass of glyceryl tristearate = 18.5 g

We need to calculate the moles of glyceryl tristearate

We know,

Moles = given mass / molar mass

Moles of glyceryl tristearate = 18.5 g / 891.47 g.mol-1

                                               = 0.0207 moles

From the above balanced reaction –

1 moles of C57H10O6 = 3 moles of NaOH

0.0207 moles of C57H10O6 = ?

= 0.0623 moles NaOH

We know,

Molarity = moles / volume(L)

Volume(L) = moles /molarity

               = 0.0623 moles / 0.575 M

               = 0.108 L

We know,

1 L = 1000 mL

0.108 L = ?

= 108 mL

108 mL of 0.575 M NaOH solution are needed to completely saponify 18.5 glyceryl tristearate.
