Incorrect S X Incorrect Question 11 of 27 a Sapling Learning macmillan learning A galvanic (voltaic) cell consists of an electrode composed of iron in a 1.0 M iron (ll) ion solution and another electrode composed of copper in a 1.0 M copper (l) ion solution, connected by a salt bridge. Calculate the standard potential for this cell at 25 oC. Standard reduction potentials can be found here Number 43 cell There is a hint available! View the hint by clicking on the bottom divider bar. Explanation / Answer

first you have to find the which one will undergo oxidation and which one will undergo reduction

that can be decided from standard reduction potential values

Cu+ + e- ----> Cu E0 = + 0.52 V

Fe2+ + 2e- ---> Fe E0 = -0.44 V

speciess which are having the less reduction potential will always undergo oxidation

so here Fe undergo oxidation and Cu undergo reduction

E0 of cell = reduction half cell - oxidation half cell

E0 cell = 0.52- (-0.44) = 0.96 V
