Explanation / Answer

9) The movement of solvent molecules across a selectively permeable membrane from the region of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration is called as osmosis. Here, sugar is added to the left side of the pipe and a water potential of -0.3 is created. This causes movement of water into the left side of the pipe. But, a pressure of 0.5 is generated using plunger on the left side of the pipe as well. This counteracts the earlier osmotic pressure and therefore water molecules move from left side of the pipe to the right side. So, the answer for this question is option B (right).
