Question

Use the following information for questions 1 through 8 Most facultative anaerobic organisms that produce ethanol as a product use the glycolysis pathway followed by alcohol fermentation to produce ATP from glucose. The laboratory you work for has discovered an organism called E. hugdahlis that uses several reactions not found in the typical glycolysis pathway (reaction 1, reaction 2, and reaction 3 on the figure below). Only the three specified reactions utilize new enzymes, all other reactions utilize identical enzymes to typical glycolysis and alcohol fermentation. The new pathway is shown below: çO2 H+OH H20 20 reaction 2 reaction 1 HO-H glucose glucose-6-P reaction NAD NADH NADH HOH ATP ADP CH2OPO3 CO2 2-keto-3-deoxy 6-phosphogluconic acid H- OH CH2OPo32 reaction 3 NAD NADH CO2 acetaidehyde CO2 ethanol pyruvate NAD NADH ethanol acetaldehyde pyruvate+ - glyceraldehyde 3phosphate

Explanation / Answer

E. hugdahlis produces one NADH molecule in reaction 1. The rest of the metabolic pathways are same as that of other organisms like E.coli. When these organisms are grown under similar anaerobic conditions, E.hugdahlis will be found more in number because it produces one extra NADH molecule which can be converted to 3 ATP molecules in electron transport chain.
