Question
According to LeChatelier’s Principle, in an equilibrium system, “if some stress is applied to the system, the system will shift in such a direction as to counteract the stress until a new equilibrium is reached.” The stress applied can be the addition of more reactant, the addition of product, the removal of some reactant, the removal of some product or a change in temperature. Each of these will cause the equilibrium to shift to either form more reactant or more product until the equilibrium is re-established.
Please consider the reaction: 1R + 1P -> 2W + 1B at equilibrium, explain how will the equilibrium shift in each of the following examples and state the reason for that shift:
When some B is removed, the equilibrium shifts toward the production of ______
because ___________________________________________________________
When some A is added, the equilibrium shifts toward the production of ________
because ___________________________________________________________
When some Y is added, the equilibrium shifts toward the production of ________
because____________________________________________________________
Explanation / Answer
When some B is removed, the equilibrium shifts toward the production of more products (B and W) as the equilibrium is dynamic in nature and works towards counteracting any changes made to its state. As one of the product concentration is decreased the rate of the forward reaction increases to produce B(that product) so that equilibrium is again established.
When some A is added , the equilibrium shifts towards the production of neither product nor reactant as A is neither a reactant nor a product in the given reaction,: 1R + 1P <-> 2W + 1B .Its concentration change does not affect the equilibrium anyway.
When some Y is added, the equilibrium shifts toward the production of neither product nor reactant as Y again is neither a reactant nor a product in the given reaction,: 1R + 1P <-> 2W + 1B .Its concentration change does not affect the equilibrium anyway.
