Question
In your own words define/explain the following: (no credit will be given for copied answers). Galvanic (voltaic) cell anode cathode How will you determine which electrode is the anode for the galvanic cells that you create in this experiment? A galvanic cell was made following the procedure in the manual for part C., the anode was determined to be the zinc strip and the cathode was the silver wire Write the following equations: the oxidation half-reaction the reduction half-reaction the balanced overall reaction the 'Q' term that applies to the balanced overall reaction Describe the procedure for the experiment This could be in an outline format or a flow chart format or paragraph format It should not be copied directly from the manual (This should be between 1/2 -1 page you may use the back of the page) Briefly discuss all safety precautions related to this experiment (chemical and equipment related)Explanation / Answer
1.
a)
Voltaic cell is a cell that uses a chemical reaction to produce electrical energy
Anode is an electrode in voltaic cell at which oxidation reaction occurs
cathode is an electrode in voltaic cell at which reduction reaction occurs
b)
we can measure the direction of current
Current always flows from cathode to anode since electron flows from anode to cathode
By this way we can find out the cathode and anode electrode
c)
oxidation half reaction:
Zn ---> Zn2+ + 2e-
reduction half reaction:
Ag+ + e- ---> Ag
Balanced overall reaction:
Zn + 2Ag+ ----> Zn2+ + 2Ag
