Question

Methane and water react to form carbon monoxide and hydrogen, like this:

CH4g+H2Og COg+3H2gSuppose a mixture of CH4, H2O, CO and H2 has come to equilibrium in a closed reaction vessel. Predict what change, if any, the perturbations in the table below will cause in the composition of the mixture in the vessel. Also decide whether the equilibrium shifts to the right or left.

I numbered the options. Please help! This is my last attempt! I will rate the answer!

Explanation / Answer

(A) some CO is removed
the pressure of CH4 will 2. go down,
the pressure of H2O will 2. go down.
the equilibrium will shift to right.

CO is one of the products. When one of the product is removed, it should be compensated by forming more and more of it by shifting the equilibrium in forward direction. More and more reactants will be consumed. This will decrease the reactant concentration.

(B) some CH4 is added
the pressure of H2O will 2. go down.
the pressure of CO will 1. go up.
the equilibrium will shift to right.

CH4 is one of the reactants. When one of the reactants is added, its concentration should be reduced by shifting the reaction in forward direction so that more and more of the reactants are consumed. This will increase product concentration as more and more products are formed.

(C) the volume of the vessel is reduced
the pressure of CH4 will 1. go up,
the pressure of H2O will 1. go up,
the equilibrium will shift to left.

When volume is reduced, the total pressure and partial pressure of each species is increased. The equilibrium will shift in the direction in which the is decrease in the number of moles of gaseous species. This will decreases the total pressure. In the above reaction, total number of moles of gaseous species of products is more than that of reactants. Hence, the equilibrium will shift in the reverse direction so that more and more products are consumed to give more and more reactants.
