Question
I. After washing the burette with distilled water, a student failed to rinse the burette with 1.0 M NaOH before filling the burette with NaOH and performing the first titration. a. What effect (if any) will this have on the titration? b. How will this error impact the calculated molecular weight? Mathematically justify your answer. A student over-titrated the unknown acid solution with 1.0 M NaOH and obtained a bright fuchsia endpoint 2. How will this error impact the calculated molecular weight? Mathematically justify your answer a.Explanation / Answer
Answer:1
A)
before we use the buret it must be cleansed, water residues are stuck inside it after cleaning
if we use the buret without removing the water first, the result will slightly go inaccurate as the water may change the concentration of inside solution
washing with NaOH lessen the amount of water inside and increases the amount of NaOH inside, as we are using NaOH only so it does not matter that it is already present in the buret
B)
In this case as the concentration of the NaOH present in the buret will change so
the molarity(M1) of the NaOH solution will also change hence
M1V1=M2V2
will change the value of M2
so the mass will also change as the volume remains the constant
