Question

An apparatus consisting a transparent cylinder fitted with a moveable perfectly-sealing piston, is immersed in a thermostatted environment. This would, effectively, comprise a receptacle for a pure material, wherein the temperature (T) and pressure (p) might be adjusted independently (within certain bounds). The pure material's conventional phase diagram is shown below. 1) Imagine the system is in the state represented by a. You heat the syssem but oo not notice that the piston tas become stuck in place. Question: Imagine the system is in the state represented by a. You heat the system but do not notice that the piston has become stuck in place. Describe briefly what would be observed as you kept heating, both visually and in terms of heat exchange. (Answers should be in terms of procedure and Observations)

Explanation / Answer

Initial position is a

Since you are heating the system this will lead to ncrease in temperature of the system

Also since the piston is stuck this means there will no be any volume changes

So this process becomes a Isochoric heating process.

So as we continue heating we will observe rise in temperature and pressure of the system continously

As this keeps on proceeding there will be a point there boundaries of liq and vapor pase will be indistinguishable i.e critical point.

Above the critical limit vapors will turn into gas phase.
