Polyatomics III It helps to memorize the -ate ending first. The -ite ending has one less orygen. Hypo-ite has two less oxygens than -ate. Per-ate has one more oxygen. Notice that all are negative one ions FO hypofluorite FO fluorite All halogens follow the same Pattern Learn for fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine. FOs fluorate FO perfluorate CIO hypochlorite CIO chlorite CIO3 chlorate CIO4 perchlorate BrO hypobromite BrO bromite BrO3 bromate BrO4 perbromate IO- 102 IO3 O4 periodate hypoiodite iodite iodate

Explanation / Answer

Well all halogens can have oxidation state as -1 ,+1 ,+3,+5,+7 only.

Hypo--ite has will have halogen in +1 oxidation sate

You need to remember name and formula for only one halogen the rest will follow the same pattern.

For eg FO- - Hypo-fluor-ite taken ' flour taken from flourine ' and palced between Hypo and ite.

Same follows for other 3 halogens like chlor taken from chlorine , iod taken from iodine and brom taken from bromine and hence the name becomes Hypo-chlor-ite, Hypo-iod-ite and Hypo-brom-ite.

Similar approach can be made for other species too.

Yes you will be need to remember atleast one species name. Learning the secies of chlorine willbe the easiest as you will be encountering them more frequently in your syllabus.
