Question
I would really love to get some help... or atleast the answers to these 2 questions. Thank you!
A. From what group must the terminal atoms come in an ABx molecule where the central atom is from group 6A, for the electron-domain geometry and the molecular geometry both to be trigonal planar? Answer in American notation
B. From what group must the terminal atoms come in an ABx molecule where the central atom is from group 7A, for the electron-domain geometry to be Octahedral and the molecular geometry to be square pyramidal? Answer in American notation
Explanation / Answer
A.
6A (the terminal atoms come from same group i.e. 6A in an ABx molecule where the central atom is from group 6A, for the electron-domain geometry and the molecular geometry both to be trigonal planar. For eg.SO3 has a trigonal planar structure with bond angle 120o. Here the central atom S is from group 6A, the terminal atoms O3 come from same group. SO3 molecule is triangular planar involving sp2 hybridization of the S atom. There are three electron domains on the central atom S one double bond and two single bonds
B. 7A
(The terminal atoms come from 7A group in an ABx molecule where the central atom is from group 7A, for the electron-domain geometry to be Octahedral and the molecular geometry to be square pyramidal example of a square pyramidal molecule within an octahedral electron domain is ClF5
There are five atoms surrounding a central atom with a lone pair of electrons. There are 5 electron domains on the central atom in ClF5 .
