Question

Mapt classify each of the following events based on whether the solubility of the indicated gas will increase. decrease, or stay the same. X Gas solubility increases Gas solubility decreases Gas solubility does not change The temperature is decreased. O2 in the blood of a person who is in a hyperbaric chamber. The pressure of a gas over a solvent is decreased. The partial pressure of an Air in the blood of a diver breathing anesthetic gas is increased compressed air that quickly surfaces or more of the phrases is misplaced. Henry's law states that the solubility of a gas in a liquid is directly proportional to the partial pressure of the das over the liquid. o Previous (8 Give up & View solution Try Again Next Exit

Explanation / Answer

1.

Gas solubility depends on many factors such as temperature, partial pressure, nature of solvent etc. With increase in temperature and partial pressure will increase the solubility.

Now, in Case 1, temperature decreases and partial pressure of anesthetic gas increases means that gas solubility should increase.

Case 2, pressure of gas over solent is increased means, gas solubility should increase.

Case3 : Case 3 is little different, in these both cases the question deals with the dependence of the O2 solubility in blood under pressurized surrounding conditions. Under hyperbaric conditons solubility of O2 will increase. And air solubility will also increase in blood.

2.

Concentration of chlorine; 2.10*10-5 M

Molar mass of Cl2= 35.45 g/mol

Hence.

We can calulate concentration in terms of g/L

concentration of Cl2 in g/L = 2.10*10-5 mol/L * 35.45 g/mol =7.44*10-4 g/L

Now 1 ppm = 1 mg/L

7.44*10-4 g/L = 7.44*10-4 * 103 mg/L = 0.744 mg/L= 0.744 ppm

So, 2.10*10-5 mol/L = 0.744 ppm
