Question

Please write in sentences what the data shows. The product is: trans 2 nitrocinnamic

Example: The broad range of peaks from 2827ppm to 3071ppm indicated the presence of benzene ring with Csp2 and Csp3 bonds. A huge peak at 1682ppm indicated the presence of carbonyl group which could either be part of a ketone, aldehyde, or carboxylic acid and the broad peak between 2557ppm and 3071ppm confirms the presence of carboxylic acid. In the carbon NMR spectrum, the peak at 172.3 ppm indicates the presence of acid and the peaks between 128.5 to 133.8 ppm indicate the presence of benzene ring

2 Ippm)

Explanation / Answer

The IR shows broad range of peaks from 2476 cm-1 to 2953 cm-1. The broad nature may be due to OH of carboxylic acid. However, an OH is expected further downfield and there are multiple peaks in between which could be due to an aldehyde. A strong peak at 1686 cm-1 is due to the presence of conjugated carbonyl group and the peak at 1627 cm-1 and 1600 cm-1 are indicative of the presence of alkenyl C=C. Peaks at 1570 cm-1 and 1517 cm-1 also suggest aromatic C=C. However, 13C NMR creates doubt about whether the data is for trans 2 nitrocinnamic. The expected peak around 170 ppm for C=O of carboxylic carbon is missing. Since, the NMR is cut after 165 ppm and 1H NMR also does not show spectrum 8.5 ppm, it is difficult to say whether the spectra are due to trans 2 nitrocinnamic, trans 2 nitrocinnamaldehyde or trans 2 nitrocinnamoyl chloride.
