Question

I received the theory behind this question the other night but I forgot to ask about how the 100 million years is calculated ? Is there a formula to use ?

QUESTION 30 (1 mark)
Oceans are another example of something that seems everlasting but actually having a long but finite age. Oceans can form and grow as continents separate over time. How old is an ocean? (Assume an ocean 10000 km wide resulting from two continents separating at 10cm per year)
a) 300 million years.
b) 200 million years.
c) 100 million years.
d) 400 million years.
e) 500 million years.

thanks :)

Explanation / Answer

Oceans are formed millions of years ago by nature and the age of oceans is calculated as follows.

Width of ocean=10000km

Rate of separation=10cm per year

1cm = 10^-5km

For 10cm=10×10^-5=10^-4km

Now dividing the width and rate of separation,we get=(10,000)/(10^-4)

=100000000=100million years
