Discussion Forum Question

Deviance can be better understood if we know the context in which it occurs. Pick an example of deviance that has happened recently. Go to the internet and get an example and include your source. Next identify the sociological theory of deviance that is at work. Remember also that deviance when defined sociologically means something that violates social norms. Most of the time we think of deviance as negative but there are some positive examples as well.

This week's Discussion Forum will require you to understand the information presented in Chapter 7, starting on page 149 with the sociological theories of deviance. (If you are using the eBook there are no page numbers. The eBook is divided into chapters and sections)

Explanation / Answer

DEVIANCE: It is defined as the violation of cultural norms or accepted standards. DEVIANT is a person whose behaviour is not usual and is generally not acceptable. There are different types of deviance theories depending upon the natural tendency to behave in a particular way.

SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES OF DEVIANCE: There are certain wide ranges of behaviours in our society that are violating and unacceptable. Socialogical theories of deviance are the deviant behaviour of individuals which mainly focus on the social environment and it's circumstances. The sociological theories of deviance use social context to explain deviance better, while other theories like biological and physiological theories use their respective contexts. People are placed in different stages in society and it is not possible that every member in that society to behave like others and this leads to deviant behaviour.

For example a person who is not rich enough or don't have money like other people in society undergo certain stress and finally result in robbery and scam which are the result of deviant behaviour and is unusual and not acceptable in society. The other few examples of deviant behaviour are theft, rapes, murder and assault.
