Question
In this Assignment, you will collaborate with your peers and develop a strategy with the aim of preventing obesity in children and youth in a community setting (see the reading by Flynn et al., 2006 and by Patton et al., 2009, to help your thinking on this issue). Over the next three Modules (3, 4, and 5), you will be completing a multi-part assignment. This is a Group Assignment which you will do in collaboration with three other students in your class. Your facilitator has chosen your groups on a random basis for the Assignment in this module. You may wish to designate tasks for the strategy development between group members. You may also wish to choose a group leader to pull together different parts of the Assignment. Only one 2,000-word Assignment should be submitted through Turnitin (i.e., each group submits one Assignment to which all members of the group have contributed). Note: To prevent social loafing, groups experiencing problems with the level of commitment of individual members are required to contact their course facilitator in the first instance. If problems persist, the group leader should submit a Peer Evaluation Form (available on Blackboard). Marks may be deducted for individual members who do not live up to the expectations of the other group members. Once you know the group you are in, work out the best way to communicate with your peers for the development of the Assignment (e.g., through Skype, telephone, and/or email or other method). To prepare for this assignment: 1. Create a fictional non-communicable disease (NCD) prevention action team. 2. Analyse the roles and responsibilities of the team and which organisations or community groups they would represent. 3. Identify the timeframe and budget limitations of the strategy you developed. 4. Identify the most effective disease prevention interventions. Your strategy should cover all levels of disease prevention discussed in modules 4-6. It is also important to separate the different phases of your strategy, for example, planning, community engagement, implementation, management, evaluation and recommendations, by using suitable sub-headings for each stage in the assignment paper. Make several recommendations about preventing obesity in children and youth. The output will be a 2000-word paper
Explanation / Answer
OBESITY: Obesity is defined as a condition where a person have excessive accumulation of body fat with numerous negative effects on their health. Obesity is also defined as a disorder when ideal body weight is exceeded by 20% which increases the risk of health problems.
BMI(BODY MASS INDEX): It simply indicates the gross estimate for the amount of fat in body and tells us whether we need to lose weight or not. The BMI is a measurement of one's height and weight. If a person's BMI is 25 to 30% higher, they are considered OVERWEIGHT and if the range of BMI exceeds 30% then they are considered to be OBESE. About 7 million children are overweight and this number has doubled since 20 years.
MAJOR CAUSES FOR OBESITY IN CHILDREN & YOUTH:
DIET: High intake of calories like fast-foods, sugar drinks, candys which are high calorie foods.
LACK OF SLEEP: In the present generation of TV's and PlayStations no one really care for sleep especially youth. Watching TV's till late nights is one major reason for overweight.
GENETICS: Obesity has a strong genetic component. Some studies made it clear that there are genetic components that do affect our susceptibility to gain weight.
RECOMMENDATIONS ABOUT PREVENTING OBESITY IN CHILDREN AND YOUTH: To overcome obesity and overweight in children and especially youth, the below mentioned steps can be followed.
1. Many children don't usually eat BREAKFAST regularly. Skipping breakfast reduces weight is totally wrong and low calorie breakfast has to be taken, can also include fresh fruits.
2. GO GREEN(LEAFY VEGETABLES) : Raw vegetables like Carrots, broccoli and green leaves are really low in calories with high water content.
3. Getting enough protein when you're dieting also helps you lose weight. Eat FISH & CHICKEN instead of red meat which have more protein and less calories compared.
4. EXERCISE: It is very important to educate children about the benefits of being physically active. Teach them in detail about the benefits like Bone strength, reduces stress and anxiety, helps in weight management. Encourage them to participate in sports and games in school which can help them to stay fit. Parents should try to take their children to walk along with family which can help them to burn few calories.
5. The other major factor affecting children especially youth is SLEEP. Children should get almost 10 hours sleep per day and usage of mobile phones, watching tv, using laptop till midnight is quite became a fashion and parents should take care of their children and SET TIMES for watching tv and accessing computer etc. Which can help them to sleep properly.
I personally believe that it's parents responsibility in this case of children's obesity as parents should balance the calories their child consumes from foods and beverages. They should take care of their children to maintain healthy weight and encourage healthy eating habits.
