2. This novel depicts life in 1922. Do you find its themes and attitudes relevant today? What things have remained the same?
Answer:
Though the GREAT GATSBY was written almost a century ago it is still remains as literary classic. Many themes related to the book can be seen in societies today. If we observe Gatsby we can see his luxurious grand mansion and lavish parties, so we can clearly understand that during the Great Gatsby the economy was prospering and the dynamics of the society in real life were changing. There are many ways that the Great Gatsby relates to real life and also to our real lives even.
Basically people are attracted to a higher class of living and also everyone wants to be rich. Celebrity is another relevant theme that the novel shares with the present day. Many of the characters from the novel are wealthy and have a high social status, which many people are trying to be so. Gatsby is similar to many people in our lives today.
The themes and attitudes of the Great Gatsby is very much realted to today's life because in the novel Gatsby is very popular because of his big parties in his mansion and many people go to his house without even knowing who he is or don't even know how he looks like. All these things remained the same and still there are many people in this world who just care about popularity which still believable today.
4. Select one character in the novel. What role does this individual play in the novel?
Answer:
DAISY BUCHANAN is the link between the three important men(Gatsby,Tom and Nick) in the Great Gatsby. Daisy is Nick's cousin, Tom's wife and the lady that Gatsby loves. She always dresses in lavish gowns and with short blonde hair. Her voice is so harmonious like music that can drive people easily, which made Gatsby has his own fantasies about her. The action of Daisy Buchanan is leading a higher class wife position in society. But seriously there is nothing to suggest any amount of deliberation in her actions. Daisy is a rich young woman from an upper class background. If we observe her character closely we can notice she is not intelligent and also not a total idiot.
Daisy Buchanan is married to TOM and has a daughter. She hire many people to do all her works so that she can go to parties and enjoy all the time. In one word the attitude of Daisy can be called as ABSOLUTE FOOLISHNESS. Jordan Baker and Nick remember her as the golden girl. She always lives in a feeling that her husband is cheating on her. She broke her promise by comparing Tom's extreme wealth to Jay Gatsby and this clearly shows her extreme immaturity.
