Question

Disscuss or give the disadvantages of the following opinion "The theory that speaks to me most would have to be Douglas McGregor's Theory X and Theory Y; applicable to Theory Y.

Theory Y speaks of:Rather than authority, direction, and close supervision, Theory Y managers emphasize a relaxed managerial atmosphere in which workers are free to set objectives, be creative, be flexible, and go beyond the goal set by management. (Nickels, McHugh, McHugh, Cossa, Stevens and Sproule, 2016).The reason why this brings a lot of attention because it motivates employees to see the company as part of their own. I find employees set target goals further than anticipated and own more processes than the typical associates who have to be sought after with an X Theory management. They set their own goals and as a manager; they are viewed to get rewarded for it. No one knows the operations processes better than the grunt workers which is why it's great to see associates feeling empowered to bring ideas to an open door policy and having a good sit down with management about improvements in basic processes and creations. It's important to have these basis' set when hiring as well to have new hires already feel positive and empowered right from the job interview all the way to long term employment, showing how you care and empower employees right off the bat really gives a sense of positivity and standard. It also prevents associates from having to be spoken to right off the get go when a consistent message is relayed from start to finish.

Explanation / Answer

DISADVANTAGES

(i) When workplaces have lax guidelines for communications or job duties, and inadequate supervision, productivity will suffer. Workers need to consult with a supervisor at least on occasion to ensure they're performing their job duties well. Otherwise, employees may deviate from their roles, fail to meet expectations and grow lax in communicating with other employees. Worse, a company with lax safety and hygiene enforcements puts staff and clients at risk.

(ii)This kind of theory may work effectively for small businesses but not for large businesses where supervision and authority plays a pivotal role.

(iii)Certain employees require a structured environment to thrive

Some individuals thrive in traditional office environments, and when left somewhat to their own devices may find it difficult to work. The fact that members of their team and fellow colleagues do not share the same schedule, can be unnerving to some and actually hinder goal achievement. Hence, many employers demand that there are at the very least, core hours and or days in which everyone must be in office.

(iv)There is no clear distinction between work and home

When taking on a flexible schedule, it can be hard to draw the line between when you are working and when you are being a mother, father, care taker, relaxing etc. It may also mean that your employer takes advantage of your schedule, and may demand more hours from you, and those hours may be more obscure i.e. 9:30pm work calls.

(v)In team-oriented departments, it may be nearly impossible to implement flexible working schedules as teams must meet almost daily

(vi)Although unlikely, there is a chance that your employees will take advantage of their new-found freedom and slack off on their work. However, such an instance would be hard to come by, even so, it would make it self-apparent quite quickly

(vii)If you are a serial micro-manager, you may struggle to adjust your management style and find yourself at a loss at how to direct your team

(viii)Juggling clients can become hard, especially when those you are dealing with do not operate in a similar manner, and expect continual 5 day a week service
