Question
Consider the recent revelations that Volkswagen cheated on emissions testing by programming their cars to recognize when a test was occurring and modify engine performance to meet emissions standards. Volkswagen was found criminally liable, forced to pay a significant fine, and made to offer owners the opportunity to sell back their affected cars to the company. Did Volkswagen act immorally and illegally, or did the company simply act illegally? When presenting your argument, be sure to discuss why your interpretation is better than the alternative.
Explanation / Answer
By cheating on emissions testing by programming their cars to recognize when a test was occurring and modify engine performance to meet emissions standards Volkswagon not only acted illegally but also immorally.
Cheating on emissions testing apart from being illegal was also unethical and immoral. Every business works in an environment and takes a lot from society, it is its responsibility in return to work ethically and do not harm the environment in which it is working. Cheating in any form is not only illegal but also inethical. By not following the emission norms Volkswagen has harmed the environment. It has polluted the environment and added to current cause of environment degradation and global warming. The company should have had its own conscience before engaging in such a practice. This is an extremely inethical and irresponsible behaviour from a huge MNC organisation like volkwagen. It has caused harm to the society as whole. Thus it is wrong to call this act merely illiegal.
Volkswagen not only acted illegaly but also immoraly by cheating on emissions testing.
