Explanation / Answer
There has been a sharp decline in the number of union members since 1983. The union membership raye declined from 20.1 percent in 1983 to 11.1 percent in 2015. This sharp decline might be attributed to a shift from manufacturing sector to services sector. The employment has not much been affected by this shift as the service sector added more jobs to the economy. Also globalization and the invention of new technology might be the reason behind the substantial decline in unions. There has been a sharp decline in the number of union members in the private sector as compared to the public sector. This decline has not only affected the union members but also the nonunion workers. Due to this wages has been stagnated. The unions set standards for wages but the decline in unions has brought growth in wages to a halt. One of the consequences for this decline has adversely affected wage differential and hence the wage inequality has risen.
Also from the source of U.S. Bureau of Labour Statistics, the workers who belonged to union had median earnings of $980 weekly as compared to $776 for nonunion workers. The benefits and the working conditions for the union members are much better as they are provided with better health insurance and retirement pay. The decline in union membership also threatens the job stability as there is no guarantee for the tenure of the workers.
