Part B When hard stabilization structures such as groins are used to stabilize a shoreline, the change in the longshore current results deposition of sediment. How and why does this occur? Hints O The longshore current slows and sediment is deposited on the downcurrent side of the barrier. The velocity of the longshore current decreases and sediment is eroded on the upcurrent side of the barrier O The velocity of the longshore current increases and sediment is eroded on the downcurrent side of the barrier O The longshore current slows and sediment is deposited on the upcurrent side of the barrier O The longshore current speeds up and sediment is deposited on the downcurrent side of the barrier Submit My Answers Give Up Part C will develop when ocean waves approach shore at an angle and wash back perpendicular to the coast, creating a net direction of motion parallel to the coast. Explanation / Answer

Part B. The answer is: The velocity of the longshore current decreases and the sediment is eroded on the up-current side of the barrier. The longshore current is forced to change direction when it comes near the groin, which is a man-made structure used for stabilization. After being eroded on the upcurretn side of the barrier (groin), the current continues to flow and the sediment is eroded on the down-drift side of the groin because of turbulence caused by the groin.

Part C. The answer is Longshore Current. Sediments are transported along the coast which is parallel to the shoreline, the sediments being transported by ocean waves which approach the shore at an angle and wash back perpendicular to the coast. The net motion is parallel to the shoreline. As a result, splits, barriers and tidal inlets are formed.
