Question
Please write a short note on Transform plate boundary at Mid oceanic ridge. While writing this note please address the following questions. I please do not copy and paste 1. Plates are moving apart which causes compression or extension 2. Which type of faults do we expect in such cases? 3. Why do we see strike slip faults at mid oceanic ridge? 4. Can you draw a diagram of a transform plate boundary as given in Slide 13 of lecture 09 Strike Slip fault ( the picture bottom picture)? I am putting it here as well. Relative movement No relative movement inactive) 5. On this picture indicate where the strike slip fault is actually occurringExplanation / Answer
1) Plates are moving apart, this cause the extension of plates by the tensional stresses. These tensional forces are acted away from each other. The compression cause the plates to move together. Hence, extension is the correct answer for this context.
2) the extension of plates can generate the normal faults.
3) Lateral shearing is present by relative opposite movement of plates each other. This cause the strike slip faulting.
5) The middle red circle that indicates Relative movement is strike slip fault in the diagram.
