One thing will always be true, change causes fear or distrust in people. When this happens it takes a few generations to get the change accepted and become something "normal". Culture is always a barrier when it comes to new trends and new technologies, and even culture changes from generation to generation.
Ecommerce is no exception to the resistance to change in every generation. Older generations are still distrustful of putting their information online when buying something. Especially when their generations are so used to touching the products and actually making the trip to the store to look for those products. In Mexico when it comes to buying things through theinternet we are still very much behind developed countries like China and the U.S. This could be because we still don't understand how it works and many people still don't have credit cards because they don't know how it works.
An example of a company is Amazon. Amazon is just starting in Mexico and is improving everyday in this difficult market. It started in 2013 by just offering kindle books, and since 2015 they have introduced physical goods. This news was no surprise since there was a study in how online commerce was to grow more than double in a very short amount of time.
As you respond to your classmates, discuss ways that will help mitigate the cultural or language issue.
Explanation / Answer
First let us be clear about one thing, Mexico speaks spanish which is very widely used language and cannot be considered as a barrier.
E-Commerce websites have more problems than just listing the products and shipping them, The first most difficult problem they will come across is logistics.
They have the burden to create their own logistics to deliver their goods faster in any country, The other duty would be to create trust among people by easily processing refunds etc.
The proximity to United States is a major advantage to E-commerce company like amazon, It can get its goods across the border very easily and there are so many US states bordering mexico that trade almost can be trouble free.
The biggest bottlenecks would be payment processing infrastructure, Low-tech banks, Credit cards etc. These all thigns would be resolved over time,
If goods are available at reasonable prices on amazon i think that mexican people will buy them, If you want an iphone and you already know how it looks and feels, There would be no need to go to shop to buy it, It can be bought with help of simple order through amazon....
Amazon has option to offer Cash on Delivery which can instantly solve most of the credit card problem.
