Question

Reno City Corpus Chriss 1. Identify the Earth motion that provides the basis for our system of local time and time zones. on the map where sunrise occurs first each day. 3. Identify nno cities on the map where of the altitude of Polaris are within one degree of each cther 4. Stale the number of degrees of longitude that separates New York City from Reno, Nevada, and the time difference, in hours, between these two cities. Base your answers to questions 5 through 7 on the diagram below and on your knowledge of Earth Science. The diagram represents Earth on the first day of a season. The equator, several lines of longitude, and the North and South Poles have been labeled. Letters A through D represent locations on Earth's sarface Pole Sun's rnys South Pole 5. State the solar time at location D if the solar time at location C is 6:00 a.m. Indicate am. or p.m. in your answer 6. State whether the relative altitude of Polaris at location A is lower or higher than at location B Explain why this difference is observed. 7. identify one possible date that is represented by the position of Earth in this diagram

Explanation / Answer

3) Two cities on the map where the altitude of polaris is within one degree are Reno and Denver. As, both of they are lies mostly within 40oN.

4) Longitude of New York City is 74o W, and longitude of Reno is 120o W.

So, longitude difference is = 120o - 74o = 46o.

There is 4 minute time difference for 1 degree longitude. So, here time difference between these two cities is

4*46 = 184 minute = 3 hours 4 minute.

5) Location C is in 60oW and location D is in 30oW.

There is 6 a.m. at location C.

Longitude difference = 30o

Time difference = 30 * 4 = 120 minute = 2 hours.

As D is towards East with respect to location C. So, at location D time is 8 a.m.

6) The angle between Polaris and the horizon is called the altitude of Polaris, or simply it is the angle with the North Star in the maintained location. At the Equator it is 0o, and in the North pole it is 90o. For any location it is just simply the latitude.

So, The altitude of polaries at location A is lower than location B.

7) Here the Sun rays is directly above the Equator. So, this is the time when there is equal day and equal night in the Earth. So, the possible date is 21 March or 23 September.
