Question

Consider the circuit shown below.

a) Rank the brightness of the bulbs. Explain your reasoning.

b) If a wire were added to the circuit as shown below,

Would the current through

i) bulb D increase, decrease or remain the same? Explain your reasoning.

ii) bulb B increase, decrease or remain the same? Explain your reasoning.

Would the potential difference across

Explanation / Answer

a)

assuming all the bulbs have same resistance ,

then current in A is maximum , as the resistance is less than the other branch.

Now , current in B is less than A , but as the current through A divides in C and D

, the current in C and D is less than B

iA > iB > iC = iD

therefore ,

the rank of brightness is A > B > C = D

b)

after adding a wire ,

this is a symmetrical configuration now , as the current is same through all the bulbs

i)

bulb D increases (the resistance in branch of D decreses )

ii)

bulb B decreses (the resistace through the B increases )

Now, for the potetnial

i)

the potenital through D also increases (as current thrugh D increases)

ii)

the potential through B decreases (as current through D decreses)
