Question
Please explain each answer please! The correct answer is A
The direction of the magnetic field in a certain region of space is determined by firing a test charge into the region with its velocity in various directions in different trials. The field direction is:
A. one of the directions of the velocity when the magnetic force is zero.
B. perpendicular to the velocity when the magnetic force is zero.
C. the direction of the magnetic force.
D. the direction of the velocity when the magnetic force is a maximum.
Explanation / Answer
1. I am assuming you meant "when the magnetic force is 0)
Use the right hand rule. The force is perpendicular to the field, which is perpendicular to the velocity.
The test charge will be shot some velocity v. It will face a force F=qvB sin?. If the velocity and the field are the same direction, ?=0, and sin ? = 0, so there will be no force.
If my assumption was incorrect, then it is two.
The direction of the magnetic force will NOT be the same direction as the field direction. It is perpendicular to it.
The field direction is not perpendicular to the velocity when the magnetic force is zero, because then the F=qvB equation would have some value, and the force should not be zero.
The field will not be the direction of the velocity when the magnetic force is a maximum is not true either. It would be zero if it was the same direction (?=0).
